The ROI of Visitor Identification: How the Math Actually Works
A plain ROI formula for visitor identification, worked through with OSPRY's measured match rate and example inputs you replace with your own.
Visitor identification can pay for itself many times over. But only if you run the math honestly.
In this post, we will walk through the ROI formula with one worked example. The only OSPRY figure in it is our published, dated match rate. Everything else is an example input you replace with your own, so you can estimate your return with numbers you can defend.
Note: This example is illustrative, not a customer case study. Your results depend on your traffic quality, geography, and sales process. Person-level identification is available for US visitors. Across our customers, OSPRY named 6 to 24 percent of unique human US visitors on a typical site, median around 11 percent, measured for the 30 days ending Aug 15, 2026. Consumer and online store traffic can resolve at lower rates.
The ROI Formula
The basic formula is:
ROI = (Named Leads × Conversion Rate × Deal Size − Cost) ÷ Cost
Let's define each variable:
- Named Leads = Person-level identified visitors each month (Monthly Visitors × Person-Level Identification Rate)
- Conversion Rate = Percentage of identified leads that become customers
- Deal Size = Average revenue generated per customer
- Cost = What you pay per named person (OSPRY starts at $0.36 each, from a prepaid wallet)
One important distinction:
ROI should always be calculated using person-level (named) leads, not total visitor resolutions.
OSPRY also identifies the company behind many visitors it cannot name as a person, which is extremely valuable for account-based marketing and sales intelligence. However, because you can't directly contact a company record the same way you can a named individual, company-only matches aren't included in the direct ROI calculations below.
Example: A Software Company
Assumptions
- Monthly website visitors: 10,000 (example input)
- Person-level identification rate: 11% (our measured median, 30 days ending Aug 15, 2026)
- Named leads: 1,100
- Conversion rate: 1% (example input)
- Average customer value: $5,000 (example input)
- Monthly identification cost: 1,100 × $0.36 = $396
Revenue Impact
1,100 named leads × 1% conversion = 11 new customers
11 × $5,000 = $55,000 additional monthly revenue
ROI
($55,000 − $396) ÷ $396
≈ 137× ROI
In other words, every $1 invested returns about $137 in net return, at these example inputs.
This example uses our measured median and assumes only a 1% conversion rate. Halve the conversion rate or the deal size and the return halves with it, so run it with your own numbers.
Calculate Your Own ROI
Use this formula:
ROI = (Monthly Visitors × Person-Level Rate × Conversion Rate × Deal Size − Monthly Cost) ÷ Monthly Cost
Where:
Monthly Cost = (Monthly Visitors × Person-Level Identification Rate) × your per-lead rate (starting at $0.36)
Example
Monthly Visitors = 10,000
Person-Level Rate = 11% (measured median, 30 days ending Aug 15, 2026)
Named Leads = 1,100
Conversion Rate = 1% (example input)
Average Deal = $5,000 (example input)
Monthly Cost = $396
ROI:
(1,100 × 0.01 × $5,000 − $396) ÷ $396
= ($55,000 − $396) ÷ $396
= 137× ROI
Simply replace the numbers with your own business metrics.
For US business websites, start with our measured range: 6 to 24 percent of unique human visitors, median around 11 percent, measured for the 30 days ending Aug 15, 2026. Your dashboard shows your real number.
Consumer-focused websites should use a lower percentage.
Beyond Direct ROI
The examples above only measure revenue generated from converted named leads. In practice, visitor identification creates additional value.
Company-Level Identification
OSPRY also identifies the company behind many visitors it cannot name as a person.
While these aren't immediately contactable individuals, they're highly valuable for:
- Account-based marketing
- Retargeting campaigns
- Sales prioritization
- Pipeline forecasting
Email List Growth
Every identified, consented visitor can become part of your email audience.
Even modest subscriber lifetime values create significant long-term revenue beyond initial conversions.
Sales Team Efficiency
Sales teams spend less time prospecting cold leads and more time engaging people who have already demonstrated buying intent.
Benefits include:
- Lower acquisition costs
- Higher response rates
- Better close rates
- Shorter sales cycles
Competitive Intelligence
Knowing which companies visit your website reveals:
- Industries showing interest
- Target accounts already researching you
- Market trends
- Opportunities for outbound outreach
How to Maximize ROI
1. Improve Follow-Up
The faster and more personalized your outreach, the higher your conversion rate.
Automated email sequences, CRM workflows, and behavioral triggers all increase returns.
2. Increase Conversion Rate
Even small improvements have a dramatic impact.
Doubling your conversion rate doubles the revenue generated from the same identified audience.
3. Increase Customer Value
Higher-value products, premium plans, bundled services, and upsells all increase ROI without increasing acquisition costs.
4. Prioritize US Business Traffic
Person-level identification performs best with US business audiences.
International and consumer traffic still provides value but generally produces lower person-level identification rates.
Conclusion
Visitor identification delivers impressive returns when measured using named, reachable prospects rather than anonymous traffic.
These examples are not guarantees. They are models built on our measured match rate and example business inputs.
The best way to determine your actual ROI is to run the numbers using your own traffic and customer values.
